Disturbia is Rear Window with an ankle monitor, a video game ban and a lot less patience. Shia LaBeouf’s Kale is stuck at home on house arrest, and the first half is legit fun: binoculars, a camcorder, a best friend in Aaron Yoo who gets most of the laughs, and a growing hunch about the man next door. David Morse is the reason it works. His Mr. Turner is unsettling doing the most ordinary things, like backing into his garage or smiling politely at Kale’s mom, and you can never quite tell if Kale’s just paranoid. Then the movie stops trusting the slow burn. The last act turns into a dark-house chase you’ve seen plenty of times, and Carrie-Anne Moss, as the mom, is stuck looking worried. LaBeouf has real charm as a sarcastic kid with a sad streak. It made $118.1 million worldwide on a reported $20M. A 6.4 because the suspense is sharp until it settles for loud. $748 says you know your neighbor’s trash day by heart before Friday and can’t explain how.
What works: David Morse is quietly menacing, and the house arrest setup turns ordinary suburban details into real suspense.
What doesn’t: The final act abandons the slow burn for a generic chase, and Carrie-Anne Moss is wasted as the worried mom.
Who it’s for: Teens and grown-ups who want a light, fun suspense movie on a weeknight and have never seen Rear Window.
Kale is right about Mr. Turner, who really is behind the disappearances in the news. In the finale Kale crosses his property line to rescue his mom from Turner’s house, stops him for good, and finishes his sentence with Ashley by his side.
A year after a family tragedy, high schooler Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf) is struggling, and when his Spanish teacher makes a careless remark about his father, Kale takes a swing at him. The judge gives him three months of house arrest and an ankle monitor. His mom Julie (Carrie-Anne Moss) cuts off his video games, so Kale picks up binoculars. He and his best friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) watch the new girl next door, Ashley (Sarah Roemer). Then Kale starts watching the quiet neighbor, Mr. Turner (David Morse), and does not like what he sees. D. J. Caruso directs. One hundred four minutes, stay inside the line.
Anyone with a spare pair of binoculars and nothing to do for three months.
