Late in its 152 minutes, Doctor Sleep packs up its own story and drives to the Overlook Hotel for a fan tribute, and that’s where it stalls. Lookalike actors stand in for famous faces, and it feels more like a reunion photo than a nightmare. Before that, it’s a moody road thriller about psychic kids and the people who hunt them, slow to get its pieces on the board. Ewan McGregor is excellent as grown-up Danny, a gentle, haunted man who finally found a use for his gift at a hospice. Kyliegh Curran’s Abra is so confident you almost pity the villains. Rebecca Ferguson’s Rose the Hat is the star, a smiling, top-hatted cult leader with a voice like warm honey and a very cold heart. It made $72.4 million worldwide on a reported $45 to $55 million. A 6.9 because the new story is strong and the nostalgia trip is a detour. $42.51 says the next time a cat chooses your lap out of everyone in the room, you get a little nervous about why.
What works: Rebecca Ferguson makes Rose the Hat a magnetic villain, and Ewan McGregor gives Danny a quiet, earned decency.
What doesn’t: At 152 minutes it’s slow to get going, and the Overlook finale leans on nostalgia instead of new scares.
Who it’s for: Fans of The Shining who want to know what happened to Danny, and horror viewers who like a slow, character-driven burn.
Danny lures Rose to the abandoned Overlook and turns the hotel’s old ghosts loose on her. He stays behind to set off the boiler and goes down with the hotel, then returns as a gentle ghost to check on Abra.
Decades after the Overlook Hotel, Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is a grown man still haunted by what happened there. He spent years drinking to quiet his psychic gift, the shining, before getting sober in a small New Hampshire town, where he works at a hospice and gently comforts patients near the end. Then a young girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), whose shine is even stronger than his, reaches out to him. Abra has sensed something terrible: a group called the True Knot, led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), hunts people like them. Mike Flanagan directs. One hundred fifty-two minutes, sleep with the light on.
Anyone with a little shine. Keep it to yourself.
