Arrogant genius, life-wrecking accident, humbling trip abroad, fancy new outfit. Marvel already made this movie, and it starred Tony Stark. Doctor Strange adds a cape and a better goatee. Benedict Cumberbatch is fun as a surgeon whose ego walks into rooms before he does, and the American accent mostly holds. The villain is Mads Mikkelsen, a great actor stuck with cracked eye makeup and no personality. But the visuals are nuts. Buildings fold like paper, streets flip upside down, and a hospital fight with Strange half out of his own body is a ton of fun. Tilda Swinton is great, and Benedict Wong steals every scene with a perfectly straight face. The romance with Rachel McAdams is a placeholder. A 6.8 because the eye candy is legit and the story is a rerun. $832 says you try one of those twisty spell hand moves on a stuck jar lid and blame the jar when it doesn’t work.
What works: The mind-bending visuals, Benedict Wong’s deadpan scene stealing, and Cumberbatch’s fun take on an arrogant genius.
What doesn’t: The origin story follows a familiar Marvel template beat for beat, and Mads Mikkelsen’s villain has nothing interesting to do.
Who it’s for: Marvel fans who care more about trippy visuals than a fresh story.
Strange beats Dormammu by trapping them both in a time loop and losing over and over until the villain gives up. Mordo walks away from the order, disgusted with how freely they bend the rules of nature.
Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a brilliant neurosurgeon with a giant ego and a nicer watch collection than you. Then a car crash wrecks his hands, and his whole career goes with them. Out of options and nearly out of money, he follows a rumor to Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu, where a teacher called the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and her student Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) show him the universe is way weirder than his textbooks said. Back home, fellow surgeon Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) still picks up his calls. Scott Derrickson directs. One hundred fifteen minutes, buildings folding like origami.
