Georgekutty turned his own story into a hit movie, which is a bold choice for a man with that particular secret in his past. Drishyam 3 starts from that joke, then loses its grip. Two journalists go sniffing for the film’s real inspiration, every marriage proposal for his daughter Anju collapses after anonymous calls, and someone has dug a pit on his plantation and filled it back in. Trouble is, for most of the runtime Georgekutty is reacting instead of planning, and the series’ famous chess player spends the movie playing checkers. Critics knocked the script for being torn between family drama and crime thriller, and the twists don’t hit like the first two films. Mohanlal is still the reason to go. He plays Georgekutty as worn down by years of fear and guilt, and his face carries scenes the writing can’t. Kalabhavan Shajon’s bitter, unraveling Sahadevan adds real menace. A 6.0 because the star is great and the puzzle is soft. $882.07 says you start keeping the dates on your receipts straight, just in case.
What works: Mohanlal is superb as a Georgekutty worn down by fear and guilt, and the darker, more emotional angle gives the character new layers.
What doesn’t: The script can’t decide between family drama and crime thriller, and the twists are weaker than the ones that made the first two films famous.
Who it’s for: Drishyam fans who want to see where Georgekutty ends up, even if this chapter is more about guilt than clever escapes.
Prabhakar, IG Thomas Bastin and Sahadevan try to frame Anju with a staged incident, and Georgekutty turns the plan back on them, forcing a confession that implicates the men behind it. He then surrenders on his own terms to protect his family, and a post-credits scene shows Geetha still wants Anju to answer for the past.
Five years after the last round, Georgekutty (Mohanlal) has done something bold: he made his own story into a hit movie, and now he just wants a normal life with his wife Rani (Meena) and daughters Anju (Ansiba Hassan) and Anu (Esther Anil). Normal is not on the menu. A pair of journalists start asking whether the film is secretly based on real events, and every marriage proposal for Anju falls apart thanks to mystery phone calls. Jeethu Joseph writes and directs again. One hundred sixty minutes, and Georgekutty is still three steps ahead, probably.
Movie buffs with good memories. Georgekutty would prefer you forget a few dates.
