Vijay Salgaonkar is so far ahead of the police by now that Drishyam: The Conclusion isn’t a whodunit so much as a how-did-he-pull-it-off. That’s the catch. At 150 minutes, the final Hindi chapter leans hard on the franchise formula, and the last stretch is mostly waiting for Vijay to reveal how he already won. Getting there is still a pleasure. Tabu is heartbreaking as Meera, a mother who refuses to let her son’s case stay closed, and her grief gives the film its weight. Jaideep Ahlawat’s SP Tomar is a patient, dogged hunter, quietly shadowing Vijay from church visits to a friendship with a security guard. Prakash Raj arrives as Indrajith Shetty, a star lawyer, and turns the courtroom into the best part of the movie. Ajay Devgn is as steady as ever as Vijay. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it 100%. A 7.1 because the tension holds, even when the cleverness gets smug. $2,103 says you ask a friend where they were on some random Tuesday and enjoy watching them panic.
What works: Tabu’s grieving mother and Prakash Raj’s courtroom scenes give the film real weight and tension.
What doesn’t: It’s overlong, sticks too closely to the franchise formula, and the self-satisfied cleverness of the finale wears thin.
Who it’s for: Viewers who have seen the first two Hindi films and want to know how Vijay pulls it off one last time.
The court acquits the Salgaonkars after recordings seem to prove Vijay was home, though the police later work out that his family faked them. The final reveal is the lifelike prop he had been building for his film, quietly swapped into the grave so the very evidence meant to catch him became his alibi.
Six months after the case against the Salgaonkar family was closed without enough proof, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu) still cannot let it go. She is convinced Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) knows what happened to her son Sameer. Her husband Mahesh (Rajat Kapoor), who once wanted it all behind them, now asks SP Rajveer Singh Tomar (Jaideep Ahlawat) to reopen the file. Tomar starts shadowing Vijay, poking at old evidence and older alibis, while Vijay's wife Nandini (Shriya Saran) tries to keep the family steady. Abhishek Pathak directs the third Hindi chapter. One hundred fifty minutes, check the dates.
Anyone with a perfect memory for dates. Vijay will test it.
