Easy A (2010)

The funniest people in Easy A are the parents, which is a weird flex for a teen comedy. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson play the coolest mom and dad in movie history, and every dinner table scene with them is gold. Emma Stone carries the rest on pure charm, talking straight into a webcam like she invented the vlog. The problem is the plot. One fib turns into a rumor, then Olive starts letting guys pretend they went out with her in exchange for gift cards, and by the third act the script is checking boxes instead of telling jokes. Amanda Bynes plays the church club queen so big she’s basically in a different movie. Penn Badgley’s Todd is so nice he barely registers. It made $75 million worldwide on a reported $8 million budget. A 7.3 because Emma Stone is a movie star from her first scene, even when the jokes run out of gas. $756 says you spend the weekend singing the greeting card song and blame Olive.

What works: Emma Stone’s timing, and every scene with Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as the most relaxed parents ever put on screen.

What doesn’t: The rumor plot runs out of ideas by the third act, and Amanda Bynes’s villain is a cartoon in a movie that’s otherwise pretty sharp.

Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on teen movies and wants one where the lead is actually smarter than the script.
