How Enemy at the Gates Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Enemy at the Gates is two movies fighting over the same rifle scope: a patient, nerve-shredding duel between two snipers, and a love triangle that keeps wandering into the frame. The duel wins every time. Jean-Jacques Annaud opens with soldiers ferried across the Volga under fire and sent forward without enough rifles to go around, and he films it soberly, without glory. Jude Law plays Vassili as a quiet country hunter who never asked to be a legend, and Ed Harris is superb as König, an older German marksman so calm that his stillness becomes the most frightening thing in the ruins. The weak link is everything around it. Joseph Fiennes’s Danilov keeps explaining his feelings, the romance with Rachel Weisz’s Tania feels written for a different film, and the Soviet soldiers mostly sound like they’re from London. It made $97 million worldwide on a reported $68M. A 6.4 because the duel is gripping and the melodrama keeps diluting it. $7,497 says you go completely still during the final duel and only notice afterward that you’re leaning toward the screen.

What works: The sniper duel between Jude Law and Ed Harris is tense and patient, and the opening river crossing is a sober, frightening look at the battle.

What doesn’t: The love triangle and Danilov’s speeches slow the movie down, and the British accents make the setting feel less real.

Who it’s for: History buffs and anyone who likes tension built from silence rather than noise.

Spoilers

Danilov, ashamed of his jealousy, deliberately steps into the open to give away König’s position, and König shoots him. Vassili then takes König down in the rail yard and later finds Tania alive in a field hospital.

Enemy at the Gates's Blurbs
About me:

Stalingrad, 1942. Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law), a young Red Army soldier with a hunter's eye, is shipped across the Volga into one of the most brutal battles of World War II. When political officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) sees what Vassili can do with a rifle, he starts writing him up in the army newspaper as a hero to lift morale. It works. Both men fall for Tania (Rachel Weisz), a soldier in the local militia, and the German command answers the legend by sending its finest sniper, Major König (Ed Harris), to find him. Jean-Jacques Annaud directs. One hundred thirty-one minutes, one long, quiet duel.

Who I'd like to meet:

Patient people with steady nerves. And anyone who wants to remember what Stalingrad cost.
