Baz Luhrmann never asks Elvis a hard question in EPiC, so if you want a balanced portrait, you’re in the wrong building. It’s also one of the most thrilling concert films in years. Luhrmann’s team dug up outtakes from Elvis on Tour and Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, footage that had no sound, and stitched it back to the old audio so well that it plays like it was shot last week. What you get is Elvis raw, a showman so in charge of a room that the camera can barely keep up. The gold jacket performance from Hawaii is pure fun, and Burning Love will make you sit up straight. In between, a rediscovered recording of Elvis telling his own story walks you through his life, though it tiptoes around the hard parts. Critics gave it 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. An 8.7 because the music is electric and the storytelling is a tribute, not a portrait. $796 says you thank a cashier this week in a low Elvis mumble and pretend that’s just how you talk now.
What works: The restored concert footage is stunning, and seeing Elvis at the peak of his powers on a big screen is a pure jolt of joy.
What doesn’t: It never holds Elvis to account or digs into the harder chapters, so as a portrait of the man it feels like a fan tribute.
Who it’s for: Elvis fans, concert film lovers and anyone who only knows the jumpsuit jokes and wants to see why he was the King.
There’s no tragic final act: the film stays with Elvis on stage and in his own words, and it leaves his last, hardest years mostly offscreen, which some critics called a dodge.
Baz Luhrmann went hunting for unseen footage for his 2022 movie Elvis and hit the jackpot: sixty-eight boxes of film sitting in a Kansas salt mine. Inside were outtakes from Elvis on Tour and Elvis: That's the Way It Is, plus the 1957 gold jacket show in Hawaii. All of it was silent, so his team spent two years restoring it and syncing it to old audio. Add a newly found recording of Elvis telling his own story, and you get the King on stage and in his own words. Ninety-six minutes, rhinestones included.
Anyone who has ever practiced the lip curl in a mirror. Jumpsuit optional.
