Picture the afterlife as a hotel lobby with a train station attached, and you’ve got the Junction, where the newly dead get one week to choose a themed forever. Beach. Mountains. Paris. No take-backs. Larry, played by Miles Teller, shows up young again after 65 years of bickering marriage to Joan. Then Joan arrives, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and so does Luke, played by Callum Turner, her first husband, gone since the Korean War, who has spent decades saving her a seat. Now she has to pick. It’s a love triangle with real stakes and a sweet streak a mile wide, and the bright, candy-colored production design is a treat. John Early’s afterlife coordinator is very obviously rooting for Luke, which adds a fun wrinkle. The middle sags, though, with too much back and forth before Joan makes up her mind. It made $35.9 million worldwide on a reported $12M. A 7.1 because it’s a big-hearted screwball romance with a great hook. $66.33 says you spend the ride home planning your own themed forever, right down to the snacks.
What works: The afterlife rules make a clever engine for a love triangle, and the bright production design gives every themed eternity its own personality.
What doesn’t: The middle stretch drags with too much back and forth, and a tighter edit would have helped the big choice land harder.
Who it’s for: Couples who bicker lovingly and anyone who likes old-fashioned screwball romance with a fantasy twist.
Larry steps aside and Joan picks Luke, but in the mountains she keeps revisiting her memories of everyday life with Larry. She leaves, finds Larry working Luke’s old bartending job at the Junction, and the two of them choose a forgotten eternity that looks like the life they shared.
Larry (Miles Teller) and Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) bickered their way through sixty-five years of marriage. When Larry passes first, he wakes up young again at the Junction, a hotel-like stop in the afterlife, where his coordinator Anna (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) explains the deal: you get one week to pick where you will spend forever, and there are no do-overs. Then Joan arrives, young too. So does Luke (Callum Turner), the husband she lost to the Korean War, who has been waiting for her ever since. Now Joan has to choose. David Freyne directs. One hundred fourteen minutes, forever on the line.
Anyone who takes twenty minutes to pick a restaurant. Try picking an afterlife.
