This movie has hot dog fingers, a raccoon chef, a giant everything bagel and a fistfight with a fanny pack, and it’s still one ending too long. At 139 minutes, the last act stacks climaxes like pancakes and you feel every single one. Michelle Yeoh gets to be a kung fu legend, a movie star, a chef and a laundromat owner on the worst tax day of her life, sometimes in the same minute. Ke Huy Quan is the reason you’ll cry. Waymond’s plea for kindness turns a multiverse brawl into the softest thing on screen. Jamie Lee Curtis as the auditor is pure menace with a stack of receipts. A few gags go for gross-out laughs that land softer than the feelings do. It made $147.9 million worldwide, which is huge for a movie this weird. An 8.9 because under all the googly eyes, it’s a story about a mom and a daughter, and that part hits like a truck. $9.18 says you stick a googly eye on your fridge and call it personal growth.
What works: Michelle Yeoh doing everything at once, Ke Huy Quan’s gentle Waymond, and a mother and daughter story that lands under all the chaos.
What doesn’t: The finale piles up ending after ending, and a couple of the gross-out gags feel like the movie showing off instead of paying off.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever argued with their mom and then felt bad about it, and people who like their action movies extremely weird.
Jobu Tupaki turns out to be a version of Joy who has given up on everything and wants her mom to give up with her. Evelyn chooses to stay, fights with kindness instead of fists, and pulls Joy back from the bagel, and in the real world the family walks into the tax office together.
Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) runs a struggling laundromat with her gentle husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan), and today is a disaster. Her strict father Gong Gong (James Hong) is visiting, her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) wants her to accept her girlfriend, and the business is being audited by a very unimpressed IRS agent, Deirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis). Then, in an elevator at the tax office, Waymond starts acting like a totally different man. He says he is from another universe and that Evelyn might be the only one who can save all of them. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert direct. One hundred thirty-nine minutes, every possible universe.
Anyone with unfiled receipts. The IRS will see you now.
