Nobody grieves quietly in an Evil Dead movie. Sébastien Vaniček sends Alice, freshly widowed, to her late husband’s family vacation house to mourn with his parents, his brother and his grandma, and it isn’t long before the in-laws start turning into Deadites. The problem is the pile-on. Once the possessions start, the movie gets so relentless and so gross that it plays like a dare instead of a story, and most of the family is only there to be knocked down. Souheila Yacoub is the reason to stay. Her Alice is guarded and quiet from the first scene, and as the night goes sideways, she turns into a fighter with a grudge that runs deeper than demons. The practical effects are top tier, and Vaniček makes a cozy house feel like a trap. It made $72.4 million worldwide on a reported $20M. A 5.6 because Yacoub is terrific and the cruelty runs on autopilot. $713 says the next time a relative mentions an old box of grandpa’s research, you leave it exactly where it is.
What works: Souheila Yacoub is fierce and grounded as Alice, and the practical effects make every Deadite feel horribly real.
What doesn’t: The cruelty is so nonstop that it turns numbing, and most of the family exists only to be knocked down, with no new ideas for the series.
Who it’s for: Grown-up Evil Dead completists who want the meanest chapter yet and can handle a hard R.
Alice finds the Kandarian Dagger in the attic and uses it to fight off the possessed family, then faces Will himself, back as a Deadite. The film reveals he mistreated her while he was alive, and when a vision of him says he loves her, she answers that it’s not enough and ends him for good.
Alice (Souheila Yacoub) has just lost her husband, Will, and she goes to grieve with his family at their secluded vacation house. Waiting there are his parents, Susan (Tandi Wright) and Edgar (Erroll Shand), his brother Joseph (Hunter Doohan), Joseph's girlfriend Thya (Luciane Buchanan) and Grandma Polly (Maude Davey). What nobody mentions: Joseph has been digging through their late grandfather's research on the Deadites, and something very old has noticed. Sébastien Vaniček directs the sixth Evil Dead film, a follow-up to Evil Dead Rise. One hundred nine minutes, worst family reunion ever.
Anyone who has survived a holiday with the in-laws. Leave the old books on the shelf.
