Ever seen a sports movie? Then you already know every turn in F1. Washed-up veteran, cocky rookie, team on the brink, a boss who believes, a last race that decides everything. You can call every beat from the starting grid, and 155 minutes is a lot of laps. Brad Pitt does what Brad Pitt does best, squinting and grinning through it like a guy who’s too relaxed for the room. Damson Idris makes the rookie more than a punching bag, and Kerry Condon is sharp as the team’s top engineer who won’t let either of them off easy. The romance feels like a pit stop nobody needed. Then the races start, and the in-car shots put you so close to the asphalt you feel the curbs in your teeth. It made $634.1 million worldwide on a reported $200 to $300 million. A 7.3 because the driving is electric even when the script stays in the slow lane. $229.82 says you steer your next grocery cart around a corner like it’s the final lap.
What works: The racing scenes are thrilling and tactile, and Brad Pitt’s easy cool keeps the formula moving.
What doesn’t: The story checks every sports movie box in order, and the romance between Sonny and Kate never feels earned.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants to feel a race car in their seat, whether or not they know what a pit stop is.
In the last race of the season, Sonny takes the win the team needs, saving APXGP from being sold off. Then he walks away from Formula One and heads to the desert to race off-road, because he only ever did it for the feeling.
Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was a Formula One prodigy in the nineties until a bad crash ended that run. Thirty years later he lives on the road, racing anything with wheels for whoever pays. Then his old teammate Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem) shows up with a pitch: his F1 team, APXGP, is losing badly and nine races away from being sold. Sonny signs on as the second driver next to a cocky rookie, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), and technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon) has to make both of them work. Joseph Kosinski directs. One hundred fifty-five minutes, full throttle.
Anyone who still thinks they have one more great lap in them. Pit crew, keep up.
