How Faces of Death Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Scolding everyone for treating violence like content while begging them to keep watching is a tough trick, and Faces of Death never decides which side it’s on. Critics called it smart and self-aware. Audiences gave it a C CinemaScore. The setup is sharp. Barbie Ferreira plays Margot, a content moderator at a TikTok-style app called Kino, who clears out the worst posts so nobody else has to see them. When a few clips start to look disturbingly real, her boss waves her off, so she turns to Reddit, and her posts blow up. The movie has fun with the 1978 original, a film famous for footage people swore was real. Ferreira keeps Margot grounded, and Dacre Montgomery plays a phone store employee who is far more than he seems. The last act gets much too rough for younger viewers. It made $2.6 million domestically on a reported $7.4M. A 5.4 because the idea is smarter than the payoff. $67.72 says you thank the next content moderator you meet, which is tricky, because you have never knowingly met one.

What works: The content-moderator setup is fresh and unsettling, and Barbie Ferreira keeps Margot believable as the one person who refuses to look away.

What doesn’t: The final act slides into standard horror-movie mayhem, which undercuts the film’s whole point about how numb audiences have become.

Who it’s for: Grown-up horror fans who like their scares with an argument about the internet attached. Not for kids.

Spoilers

Margot survives the final showdown with the man behind the videos, and she secretly recorded the whole thing on a hidden body camera. She uploads it to Kino, where it sails right through moderation, and the cheerful, careless comments underneath are the movie’s last chill.

Faces of Death's Blurbs
About me:

Margot Romero (Barbie Ferreira) moderates content for Kino, a TikTok-style video app, which means she clears out the worst posts so nobody else has to see them. Then her queue starts serving up clips that look like real killings. She tells herself they're staged, until the next one makes that hard to believe. She asks her coworkers to take a closer look. Nobody does. Jermaine Fowler plays her boss Josh, Charli XCX is coworker Gabby, and Aaron Holliday is roommate Ryan. So Margot starts digging on her own. Daniel Goldhaber directs. Ninety-seven minutes, do not scroll.

Who I'd like to meet:

Content moderators everywhere. Log off, go look at a tree.
