The mountain is closed because of earthquakes, rockslides and rain, the guide says so out loud, and everybody climbs it anyway. Nobody in this movie has ever turned back from anything. The Spierig brothers know how to make a narrow plank feel endless, and the scenes on the rickety plank walk, with the clip-in clip-out routine and a stretch called the Devil’s Elbow, are legit dizzying. Everything around them is weaker. Harriet Slater plays Jax, grieving her stunt-climber sister Shiloh, and Arsema Thomas plays the friend who talks her into one of Shiloh’s dream climbs in Thailand. They’re both committed, but the dialogue is bland, the twists pile up without making anybody more interesting, and some of the computer effects look cheap next to the real height. It also drags in the middle, when they’re stuck and mostly talking. It made $17.7 million worldwide. A 4.6 because the climbing is tense and the people doing it barely exist. $14.92 says you take the stairs at work tomorrow and grip the railing a little harder than usual.
What works: The plank walk sequences are genuinely dizzying, and the Spierigs know how to stretch a single slip into pure panic.
What doesn’t: The characters are thin, the dialogue is bland and the stacked twists add noise instead of depth.
Who it’s for: People who loved the first Fall and can forgive anything as long as somebody is dangling.
Luce is really Billie, a fan of Shiloh’s channel who lied her way into Jax’s life. Jon turns out to be a smuggler using climbers to carry his cargo, and neither he nor Billie makes it off the mountain. Jax survives and finds another destination waiting in Shiloh’s scrapbook.
Jax Hunter (Harriet Slater) is selling the truck that belonged to her big sister, Shiloh (Virginia Gardner), a climber who lived for risky stunts. She meets up with Shiloh's friend (Arsema Thomas) to handle the sale, and inside the cab they find a scrapbook full of Shiloh's dream climbs. The friend talks Jax into tackling one of them: a restricted plank walk on Mount Kwan in Thailand. Their guide, Jon (Tom Brittney), warns them the mountain is closed for good reasons: earthquakes, rockslides and nonstop rain. They head up anyway. The Spierig brothers direct. Ninety-seven minutes, do not look down.
Climbers, thrill seekers, people who read warning signs. Especially that last group.
