How Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Performed
movie guru's TLDR

The Crimes of Grindelwald has more family trees than fantastic beasts, and half the runtime goes to characters explaining who is secretly related to whom. The title villain mostly gives speeches. The beasts show up in scenes that feel like commercial breaks. Eddie Redmayne’s Newt is still lovely, shy and squinty and kind to anything with scales, but the plot keeps shoving him aside so it can set up sequels. Jude Law is the best new piece, a young Dumbledore who’s charming and cagey at the same time. Zoë Kravitz gets one big monologue in a tomb that has to carry a whole backstory by itself. The giant cat-dragon creature tearing through Paris is a real highlight, and the art direction is gorgeous everywhere. It made $655.8 million worldwide on a reported $200M, and critics gave it 36%. A 3.9 because 134 minutes of lore homework is still homework, no matter how good the wands look. $2,906 says you open a fan wiki before the credits finish and come out at midnight still confused about the Lestranges.

What works: Jude Law makes a sly young Dumbledore, Paris looks gorgeous, and the few creature scenes, especially the giant cat-dragon, still have real wonder.

What doesn’t: The story is mostly reveals and backstory dumps, Newt gets sidelined in his own series, and the big twist rewrites the lore without ever paying it off.

Who it’s for: Wizarding World completists who want every scrap of Dumbledore history, even the confusing scraps.

Spoilers

Leta Lestrange sacrifices herself to hold off Grindelwald at his rally, and Queenie walks through his blue fire to join him. Grindelwald then tells Credence his real name is Aurelius Dumbledore, a family secret left hanging for the next movie.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald's Blurbs
About me:

It's 1927, and the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) has slipped out of custody during a prisoner transfer. Three months later, magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is stuck in London with a travel ban, until his old teacher Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) quietly asks for a favor: go to Paris and find Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), a troubled young man everybody seems to want. His friends Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) show up too, and Tina (Katherine Waterston) is already in Paris. David Yates directs. One hundred thirty-four minutes, a suitcase full of creatures.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who checks their bag for nifflers before airport security.
