At his own bachelor party, Reed Richards stretches his rubber arms across a dance floor, and it’s the rare moment this sequel feels awake. Rise of the Silver Surfer has a great hook: a chrome alien on a board, zipping around Earth and leaving craters behind. The Surfer looks fantastic, and Laurence Fishburne gives him a voice with real gravity. Chris Evans is clearly enjoying himself most as Johnny, the hothead who gets every good line. Then the ideas dry up. The wedding plot is sitcom filler, Julian McMahon’s Doom pops back in for no good reason, and the doomsday threat is such a letdown it became a running joke. At 92 minutes, at least it’s short. It made $301.9 million worldwide on a reported $120M to $130M. A 3.6 because the Surfer deserved a movie and got a wedding video. $88.45 says you’re at a wedding this year and catch yourself checking the sky for anything silver during the vows.
What works: The Silver Surfer looks great and has real presence, and Chris Evans keeps every Johnny scene lively.
What doesn’t: The wedding plot is filler, Doom’s return is pointless, and the planet-eating threat is a famous letdown.
Who it’s for: Kids and nostalgic fans who want a short, harmless superhero cartoon with a shiny guest star.
The Surfer is a herald serving Galactus, who arrives as a giant cosmic storm cloud instead of the towering figure from the comics. The Surfer turns on his master to save Earth and seems to give his life doing it, but the final shot finds him floating in space, eyes snapping open, with the board racing back to his hand.
Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) and Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) are trying to get married, which is tough when you're the most famous superhero team on Earth and the paparazzi are basically on the guest list. Then something silver starts streaking around the planet, leaving giant craters behind. Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) chases it and finds a gleaming alien on a surfboard, the Silver Surfer (Doug Jones, voiced by Laurence Fishburne). Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) just wants the wedding to happen. The military wants answers. Tim Story directs. Ninety-two minutes, one seriously crashed wedding.
Anyone planning a wedding. Maybe skip the outdoor venue.
