Somebody please measure the runway in this movie, because the finale on it runs so long the plane should have reached another continent. Fast 6 is where the series stopped pretending physics applies: a tank on a Spanish highway, Vin Diesel launching off a bridge to catch someone in midair, and the word family delivered like a legal oath. Dwayne Johnson sweats through every scene like it’s in his contract. Luke Evans plays the villain as a darker Dom with a better coat. The Letty plot is pure soap opera, and the movie treats it like Shakespeare. The car stunts are nuts, the subway fight in London is great, and the story underneath runs on fumes. It made $788.7 million worldwide on a reported budget somewhere between $160 and $260 million, depending on who’s counting. A 6.2 because the action is a blast and the plot is something you nod along to between crashes. $2,686 says you google how long that runway would have to be before the credits even end.
What works: The tank chase, the bridge catch and a London subway fight that delivers exactly the chaos the series promises.
What doesn’t: The Letty memory plot is pure soap opera, and the endless runway finale stretches past even this franchise’s loose relationship with reality.
Who it’s for: Fans who come for the cars and the crew and don’t mind leaving physics at the door.
Letty has lost her memory and has been working for Shaw, but she comes back to Dom’s side. Riley turns out to be a traitor, Gisele sacrifices herself to save Han, and a mid-credits scene reveals that Han’s crash in Tokyo was caused by Shaw’s older brother Deckard.
After the Rio job, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) are rich, retired and stuck overseas, since going home means prison. Then federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) knocks on Dom's door with a job. Ex-special forces soldier Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) runs a crew of drivers tearing across Europe, and Hobbs needs better drivers to catch them. His bargaining chip: a recent photo of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), the woman Dom thought he'd lost for good. Catch Shaw and everyone gets full pardons. The crew regroups in London. Justin Lin directs. One hundred thirty minutes, and London traffic never recovers.
Anyone with a fast car and a pardon to earn. Ride or die, obviously.
