Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Two grown men trade insults like kids in the back seat for 137 minutes, and that’s not a complaint about Hobbs & Shaw, it’s the whole pitch. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham bicker from London to Samoa, and the trash talk is the most reliable effect in the whole thing. The real MVP is Vanessa Kirby, who plays Hattie as the most competent agent on the planet and makes both leads look a step slow. Idris Elba gets a cyborg body, a tricked-out transforming motorcycle and almost no personality to go with them. David Leitch stages the fights crisp and clean, but the finale in Samoa, with a whole family taking on a helicopter, goes on forever and turns into a cartoon. Helen Mirren pops in to steal one scene. It made $760.7 million worldwide on a reported $200M. A 5.6 because the banter is fun and the movie never learns when to stop. $6,999 says you split a dinner bill this week and argue about one appetizer long after everyone else has gone home.

What works: The Johnson and Statham bickering is genuinely funny, and Vanessa Kirby steals the movie as Hattie.

What doesn’t: At 137 minutes it’s badly overstuffed, and the Samoa finale drags on long after the stakes stop mattering.

Who it’s for: Fast & Furious fans who came for the trash talk and stayed for the helicopter tug of war.
