Adam Driver plays Enzo Ferrari like a locked garage: polished, impressive and very hard to get inside. Michael Mann sets it in one rough summer: the company is nearly broke, Enzo and Laura are still grieving their son Dino, and he’s keeping a second family with Lina Lardi outside Modena. Saving the business means getting Laura to sign over her half, all while his team gears up for the Mille Miglia, a punishing open-road race. Penélope Cruz, as Laura, is the force of nature here, sharp, wounded and in no hurry to sign. The pace crawls, and the business plot feels underpowered next to her. The race scenes are a jolt, and the film treats the real tragedy at its center with sober weight. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $43.6 million worldwide on a reported $95 million. A 5.8 because Cruz is electric and the engine never quite turns over. $333 says you hear a sports car downshift on the way home and pretend you know exactly what model it is.
What works: Penélope Cruz is ferocious as Laura, and the racing sequences have real speed and danger.
What doesn’t: Adam Driver’s Enzo is so emotionally closed off that he’s hard to care about, and the slow pace drags the drama down.
Who it’s for: Car people and Michael Mann devotees who like biopics zoomed in on a single turbulent season.
During the Mille Miglia, a worn tire fails on Alfonso de Portago’s car and it leaves the road into the crowd, a real tragedy that took the lives of de Portago, his navigator and spectators. Laura cashes her check but gives Enzo the money and her power of attorney, on the condition that he not name Piero his heir while she’s alive, and the film ends with Enzo taking Piero to visit Dino’s grave.
Summer, 1957. Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) builds race cars everyone wants to beat, and his company is running out of money. He and his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) are still grieving their son Dino, who died the year before, and their marriage is barely holding. Laura owns half the business. Then there's Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley), the mother of Enzo's other son, who wants the boy to carry the Ferrari name. Enzo needs a big result at the Mille Miglia, a thousand-mile road race. Michael Mann directs. One hundred thirty minutes, foot on the floor.
Racing fans, history fans and anyone who likes Adam Driver in a very good suit.
