How Fight Club Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Rule one is you don’t talk about Fight Club, and 2.67 million IMDb ratings later, nobody has ever followed rule one. That’s the joke the movie can’t escape: it roasts guys who build a whole personality out of what they buy, and a lot of those guys turned Tyler Durden into the thing they buy. Brad Pitt plays him like a cologne ad that learned philosophy. Edward Norton is the real engine, a man so tired he looks bruised before the first punch. Helena Bonham Carter’s Marla wanders into support groups in sunglasses and steals every one. Fincher turns the narrator’s apartment into a living furniture catalog, price tags floating in midair. The last act gets preachy, with Tyler giving speeches the movie only half argues with. It made $102.4 million worldwide on a reported $63 to $65 million budget, then lived forever on dorm walls. An 8.4 because it’s sharper than most of the fans who quote it. $787 says you finish it, glance at your couch, and feel judged.

What works: Edward Norton’s exhausted narrator, Fincher’s restless camera, and a script that’s a lot funnier than its reputation.

What doesn’t: The last act leans on Tyler’s speeches so hard that the satire starts sounding like a sermon, and plenty of viewers took the sermon literally.

Who it’s for: People who love a twist that changes every scene before it, and anyone who has ever stared at their furniture with suspicion.

Spoilers

Tyler Durden was never real. He’s the narrator’s other personality, and the film ends with the narrator, finally free of him, holding Marla’s hand as the credit card company towers come down.

Great
Fight Club's Blurbs
About me:

The Narrator (Edward Norton) investigates recalls for a car company, owns an apartment full of catalog furniture, and hasn't slept properly in months. His fix: crashing support groups for illnesses he doesn't have. It works great until Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), another faker, starts showing up too. On a work flight he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a soap salesman with a lot of opinions. When the Narrator's condo blows up, he moves into Tyler's falling-apart house, and together they start an underground club where guys trade punches in a bar basement. David Fincher directs. One hundred thirty-nine minutes. We're not supposed to talk about it.

Who I'd like to meet:

Insomniacs with too much flat-pack furniture. Don't mention this to anyone.
