Death works over one family in this one, branch by branch, like a gardener with a grudge. That’s the big idea in the sixth Final Destination, and it’s a good one. College student Stefani Reyes keeps dreaming about a disaster at the Sky View, a tower restaurant, that her grandmother Iris prevented decades ago. Turns out cheating Death back then only put everybody descended from the survivors on a waiting list. Stefani heads home to a family that doesn’t buy a word of it, and you can guess how long that lasts. The cast is likable enough that you actually root for them. The set pieces are clever little contraptions, and the movie is legit funny about how they unfold. Tony Todd’s scene as Bludworth is quiet and moving. It holds a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, the best reviews in the series, and made $317.9 million worldwide. A 7.4 because it’s the smartest one yet. $54.25 says you side-eye every wobbly ceiling fan you walk under this week.
What works: The family-tree twist on the formula is smart, the set pieces are clever and funny, and Tony Todd’s scene is a lovely tribute.
What doesn’t: It still follows the series formula closely, so once you learn the rules you can see most of the beats coming.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who love a clever setup and anyone who grew up flinching at the original series, as long as they’re old enough for an R.
Bludworth explains that there are two ways to cheat Death, and the family tries both. Stefani and Charlie seem to make it out, but a doctor’s explanation reveals their escape didn’t count, and Death catches up with the siblings in one last accident.
College student Stefani Reyes (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) keeps having the same nightmare: a tower coming down in 1969, a disaster that somehow never actually happened. She heads home looking for answers and reconnects with her dad Marty (Tinpo Lee), her little brother Charlie (Teo Briones) and a whole crowd of cousins, including Erik (Richard Harmon). A stack of old family letters points her toward her grandmother Iris (Gabrielle Rose), who lives in a cabin built like a fortress. Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein direct. One hundred ten minutes, and you'll never trust a coincidence again.
Anyone who reads the fine print. And the warning labels. Twice.
