Brian Dennehy’s sheriff and his deputies are written like the bullies in an after-school special, and that’s the weak spot in a movie that’s much smarter than its sequels. People remember Rambo as a headband and a giant machine gun. The first one is a sad, tight, 93-minute chase about a veteran nobody wants around. Sylvester Stallone barely talks for most of it, and his face does the work, a guy who came home from a war and found no home waiting. Once he slips into the Pacific Northwest woods, it turns into a survival thriller, all rain, mud and homemade traps, and his jump from a cliff into the treetops still makes you flinch. Richard Crenna’s Trautman arrives to warn everyone what they’re up against. Then the finale gives Stallone a raw, rambling speech about the war that hits harder than anything that blows up. An 8.1 because it’s an action movie with a real wound in the middle. $732.01 says you start the sequel expecting more of this and check twice that you’ve got the right movie.
What works: Stallone’s quiet, wounded performance and the tight survival chase through the woods make it far more than a muscle movie.
What doesn’t: The sheriff’s deputies are flat, cruel cartoons, which makes the small-town side of the story feel simpler than it should.
Who it’s for: Action fans who think they already know Rambo, and anyone who likes a lean survival thriller with something real underneath.
Rambo tears up the town and corners Teasle in the station, but Trautman talks him down. He breaks down about the friends he lost in the war and how he’s been treated since coming home, then walks out beside Trautman, under arrest and alive.
John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is a Vietnam veteran drifting through the Pacific Northwest with an army jacket, a backpack and nowhere to be. In the little town of Hope, Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy) decides he looks like trouble and drives him to the edge of town. Rambo walks right back in. Teasle arrests him, his deputies treat him badly at the station, and Rambo, still carrying the war with him, breaks out and vanishes into the mountains. Soon his old commanding officer, Colonel Sam Trautman (Richard Crenna), arrives to warn everyone what they're dealing with. Ted Kotcheff directs. Ninety-three minutes, one very bad call by a small-town sheriff.
Anyone willing to let a tired guy grab lunch in peace.
