Mark Wahlberg as a chatty hitman posing as a bush pilot is the entire movie, and it isn’t enough. Michelle Dockery’s U.S. Marshal, Madolyn Harris, has to get a mob accountant turned witness, Topher Grace’s Winston, out of Alaska, so she books a tiny plane. Winston, shackled in the back, spots the pilot’s license under a seat and notices the photo is somebody else. From there it’s 91 minutes in a cramped cabin, with Madolyn flying while a pilot on the ground talks her through it and a leak back at the Marshals makes everything worse. Wahlberg goes huge, which one reviewer called pulpy fun and most found hard to sit through. Only 29% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes liked it, and the CinemaScore was a C. Mel Gibson directs, and it feels small even for a one-room thriller. A 2.9 because a good hook got stuck in economy. $512.85 says your next pilot makes one chatty joke over the intercom and you grip the armrest a little tighter.
What works: The setup is a clean, fun hook, and Wahlberg commits to the role with total, unhinged abandon.
What doesn’t: Once the reveal lands, it turns into a cramped, campy shouting match with flat stakes and very little scope.
Who it’s for: People who want a short, pulpy thriller and don’t mind laughing at the wrong moments.
The pilot took the real Daryl Booth’s place, and the leak inside the Marshals goes all the way up to Director Coleridge, who even has Madolyn’s boss framed. Madolyn lands the plane, keeps Winston alive, and tells Coleridge he’s finished.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Madolyn Harris (Michelle Dockery) tracks down Winston (Topher Grace), an accountant who turned informant on the Moretti crime family and has been hiding out in Alaska. To get him to Anchorage, then on to New York to testify, she books a tiny charter plane. Their pilot (Mark Wahlberg) is a chatty Texan who mentions, super casually, that the radio and GPS tend to cut out. Somewhere over the Alaskan wilderness, the trip starts going sideways. Mel Gibson directs. Ninety-one minutes, one very cramped cabin.
Anyone who is chill with turbulence. Like, a lot of turbulence.
