The title is a lie. Ferrari barely shows up, and the real race is Ken Miles versus a Ford executive with a clipboard and a smile you’d never trust. Josh Lucas plays that guy, Leo Beebe, so smugly you’ll want to throw a wrench at the TV. Christian Bale is the reason to watch, all elbows and attitude, a mechanic who talks to engines like they owe him rent. Matt Damon’s Shelby is the cowboy hat holding the whole operation together. The racing is legit nuts: loud, tight and close enough that you feel the brake pedal through the couch. The trouble is the 152 minutes, because every trip back to the boardroom lets the air out of the tires. It made $226.3 million worldwide on a reported $97.6 million budget, which is a victory lap for a dad movie about gear ratios. So, 8.6, because the driving is perfect and the suits get way too much screen time. $9 says you make engine noises the next time you merge onto the highway.
What works: Christian Bale’s prickly Ken Miles and race sequences that feel fast, loud and dangerous without turning into a cartoon.
What doesn’t: Every boardroom scene slams the brakes, and the Ford suits are drawn so cartoonishly that the corporate drama gets predictable.
Who it’s for: Dads, gearheads, and anyone who has ever argued with a boss who never did the actual work.
Ford has Miles slow down at Le Mans so all three cars can cross the line together for a photo, and the move costs him the win on a technicality. Months later he dies testing a new car, and the film ends with Shelby visiting his son.
It's 1963, and Ford is selling plenty of cars but zero excitement. Executive Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) tries to buy Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) turns him down in spectacularly insulting fashion, and Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) decides the answer is to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Ford hires Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), a Le Mans champ forced off the track by a heart condition, to build the car. Shelby wants one driver for the job: Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a brilliant, hot-tempered British mechanic with no patience for suits like Leo Beebe (Josh Lucas). James Mangold directs. One hundred fifty-two minutes, seven thousand RPM.
Gearheads, grease monkeys and anyone who has ever argued with management. Bring a wrench.
