DreamWorks spent a reported $80 million on a movie about things people forget, and then people forgot to buy tickets: $53.1 million worldwide. Rough, because this one has more personality than most of the franchise stuff around it. The setup is a lost-night mystery for kids. Two best friends wake up on an island straight out of Filipino folklore with zero memory of the night before, and one of them has a brand new pair of wings she definitely did not order. H.E.R.’s Jo and Liza Soberano’s Raissa feel like real friends scared of the same thing, which is college pulling them apart. The middle gets crowded, hopping from creature to creature like a field guide on fast forward. When the flashbacks flip into anime-style 2D, though, it’s a total flex. A 7.6 because the heart is bigger than the plot, and the plot is pretty big. $6.14 says you dig out an old friendship bracelet and text whoever made it.
What works: The friendship at the center, the switch into anime-style flashbacks, and a world built from Filipino folklore that rarely gets this kind of spotlight.
What doesn’t: The middle turns into a creature-of-the-week scavenger hunt, and the folklore piles up faster than younger kids can keep track of.
Who it’s for: Families with older kids, and best friends who are about to end up in different cities.
Raww has been working for Batiba, the creature who collects memories, and Jo secretly hid their way home because she was scared of losing Raissa. Jo gives up her memories of the friendship to save Raissa, Raissa comes back for her anyway, and the two leave Nakali with a promise to return.
DreamWorks animation set in the 1990s Philippines. Best friends Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano) end up on Nakali, an island from Filipino folklore full of creatures and things people forgot, with a centuries-old were-dog named Raww (Dave Franco) along for the ride. Directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. One hundred and nine minutes of friendship bracelets and manananggal.
Anyone with a lola who told the best scary stories.
