A reported $120 million buys a lot of velvet and stormy skies, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein wants you to admire every cent before it gets to the good part. Victor’s half is a long, gorgeous tour of gothic labs, swirling coats and Oscar Isaac acting very intensely, and at 149 minutes it takes its time. Mia Goth is stuck playing a symbol more than a person, and Christoph Waltz mostly bankrolls the experiment and smirks. Then the Creature takes over the telling, and the movie finds its soul. Jacob Elordi plays him like a newborn the size of a doorway: curious, gentle, terrified, learning to talk from a kind blind man played by David Bradley. Victor, meanwhile, is truly awful to the one being who wants nothing but kindness. Del Toro clearly loves his monster more than his scientist, and so will you. A 7.3 because the Creature’s half is beautiful and Victor’s half needed a ruthless editor. $586 says you finish it and feel a little guilty about every science fair project you ever abandoned.
What works: Jacob Elordi’s Creature is gentle and heartbreaking, and every frame looks handmade with obsessive care.
What doesn’t: Victor’s half of the story drags under its own gorgeous production design, and Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz get thin roles.
Who it’s for: Gothic romance fans and anyone who has always rooted for the monster.
The story catches up to the ship in the ice, where a dying Victor and his Creature finally face each other as something like father and son. Victor asks for forgiveness, and the Creature chooses mercy over revenge.
In 1857, a Danish ship stuck in Arctic ice takes in a badly hurt stranger: Baron Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac). Something enormous is coming across the ice after him. So Victor tells Captain Anderson (Lars Mikkelsen) the whole story. A brilliant, arrogant surgeon obsessed with beating death, he is bankrolled by arms dealer Henrich Harlander (Christoph Waltz) and falls for Elizabeth (Mia Goth), who is engaged to his brother William (Felix Kammerer). Then he stitches together a body, waits for lightning, and the Creature (Jacob Elordi) opens his eyes. Guillermo del Toro directs. One hundred fifty minutes, all of them gorgeous.
Anyone still waiting on a father's approval. Dress warm, it's the Arctic.
