How Freakier Friday Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Freakier Friday puts four people in the wrong bodies, and somewhere around the midpoint it stops reminding you who’s who. Twenty-two years after the first switch, Anna is a music producer and single mom to teenage Harper, and she’s about to marry Eric, the widowed dad of Harper’s least favorite classmate, Lily. The girls want the wedding gone. One palm reading at a bachelorette party and one earthquake only four people feel later, Anna wakes up as Harper and Tess wakes up as Lily. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan slide right back in, and watching Curtis play a scheming teenager stuck in a grandma’s body is the best joke here. The trouble is the middle, where the plotting knots up and the tension leaks out. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. A 6.3 because the leads make the nostalgia worth it. $21.36 says you ask your mom which of your habits she’d fix first if you two ever swapped.

What works: Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan slip back into their roles effortlessly, and the reunion has real warmth.

What doesn’t: The double swap gets confusing in the middle, and the story leans so hard on nostalgia that it rarely surprises.

Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on the 2003 original, ideally watching with their mom or their kid.

Spoilers

All four have to change their hearts to switch back, and it finally happens at a concert where Anna and Harper sing the song Anna wrote about her daughter. The wedding goes ahead, and the last gag is Lily putting an unflattering photo of Tess on the cover of her book.

About me:

Twenty-two years after the original swap, Anna (Lindsay Lohan) is a music producer raising teen daughter Harper (Julia Butters), with plenty of backup from her mom Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis). Anna falls for Eric (Manny Jacinto), the widowed dad of Harper's new classmate and least favorite person, Lily (Sophia Hammons), and suddenly there's a wedding on the calendar. The girls are not thrilled. Then a palm reader, Madame Jen (Vanessa Bayer), does her thing, and the next morning Anna and Harper have traded bodies, and so have Tess and Lily. Nisha Ganatra directs. One hundred eleven minutes, four people, all in the wrong body.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who's ever told their mom she doesn't get it. Now you can test that.
