A car skydives out of a cargo plane in this movie, and that’s one of the calmer ideas. Physics stopped returning this franchise’s calls a long time ago. Vin Diesel says the word family so often it deserves its own spot in the credits. Jason Statham is the best villain the series ever had, mostly because he walks into rooms and things explode. Dwayne Johnson spends a chunk of it in a hospital bed, which feels like a crime against the box office. The problem is everything between the stunts: a hacker, a magic tracking gadget, and a plot that exists to move cars from one country to the next. It’s 137 minutes and you’ll feel the filler. It made $1.52 billion worldwide on a reported $250 million budget, which explains why nobody plans to stop. A 6.8 because the stunts are bonkers, the story is cardboard, and the ending lands with real heart. $442 says your next road trip includes a long debate about which car you’d drive out of a plane.
What works: The plane drop and the skyscraper jump are big, goofy and gorgeous, and Jason Statham makes a great walking explosion.
What doesn’t: The plot is a scavenger hunt for a hacking gadget, and the dialogue between set pieces is so flat it barely holds the stunts together.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a long afternoon of cars doing things cars are not legally allowed to do.
Dom and Shaw fight on a collapsing parking garage, Hobbs takes down a drone, and Shaw ends up locked in a secret prison. The final scene is a quiet goodbye to Paul Walker, who died during production: Dom and Brian drive side by side until their roads split, followed by a card that reads For Paul.
Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) earned their pardons and finally went home. Brian is figuring out minivan life with Mia (Jordana Brewster) and their son. Dom is helping Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) piece her memory back together. Then Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) shows up wanting payback for his little brother, puts Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) in the hospital and blows up the Toretto house. A shadowy government man calling himself Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) offers Dom a trade: help rescue a hacker named Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), and he'll help hunt Shaw. James Wan directs. One hundred thirty-seven minutes, zero respect for physics.
Anyone who says family and means it. Pack a parachute for the car.
