The most honest thing in Fury is the mud, and the least honest thing is the ending. For most of its 134 minutes this is a grim, cramped film about five men who have lived inside a Sherman tank so long they barely remember being anyone else. Brad Pitt plays Wardaddy like a man holding his crew together with his jaw. Logan Lerman’s Norman, a typist dropped into combat, is our way in, and his fear feels real. Shia LaBeouf does quiet, heavy work as Bible. The tank battle in the middle is the high point: slow, loud and terrifying, with every shot counting. Then the last act trades the grit for a big action movie finale, and the tone wobbles. That’s a 7.0 because the crew feels lived in and the finale reaches for a kind of glory the rest of the film refused. $447 says you spend the credits reading about real tank crews instead of reaching for the remote.
What works: The crew dynamic inside the tank and the mid-film tank battle, which is slow, loud and genuinely scary.
What doesn’t: The final stretch trades the grit for a heroic action finale, and some scenes linger on cruelty longer than the story needs.
Who it’s for: War movie fans who want the inside of a tank to feel cramped, sweaty and real.
The tank breaks down at a crossroads, and the crew chooses to stay and hold it against a much larger German unit. Nearly all of them die, and Norman survives hidden under the tank, spared by a young German soldier who spots him and says nothing.
April 1945. The war in Europe is almost over, but not for the crew of a Sherman tank called Fury. Don "Wardaddy" Collier (Brad Pitt) commands it, with gunner Boyd "Bible" Swan (Shia LaBeouf), driver Trini "Gordo" Garcia (Michael Peña) and loader Grady Travis (Jon Bernthal). They have just lost a crewmate, and his replacement is Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman), a young Army typist who has never been in combat. Now the tank is pushing deeper into Germany with orders that keep getting harder. David Ayer directs. One hundred thirty-five minutes inside a steel box, and none of it easy.
History buffs and anyone who wants to understand what that generation went through. Sit with it.
