How Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Cat Francisco. That’s the actual name of the city in this movie, and it’s the level of commitment you’re signing up for. Gabby, played by Laila Lockhart Kraner, is driving there with Grandma Gigi, played by Gloria Estefan, when CatRat accidentally unhooks the family dollhouse and it rolls straight into a shop. Kristen Wiig’s Vera, a cat lady with an entire drawer of cat stuff, scoops it up and takes it home. Gabby gives her cat ears the magic pinch, goes doll-sized, and heads in after it. Wiig is the one thing clearly aimed at grown-ups, and she nails it. The movie’s quiet theme, being scared of growing up, is sneakily sad, like a mini Toy Story. Everything else is pitched squarely at preschoolers, and the nonstop sunshine wears on anyone past the first grade. A 5.8 because little kids will adore it and parents get exactly one great performance. $813.38 says a cardboard box in your house becomes a dollhouse by Sunday, and you’re the one stuck doing the cutting.

What works: Kristen Wiig gives adults something to enjoy, and the film’s thread about being scared to grow up has real feeling.

What doesn’t: Outside of Wiig, almost nothing is pitched at adults, and the relentless cheer gets exhausting quickly.

Who it’s for: Preschoolers who already know every Gabby Cat by name, and the parents doing the driving.

Spoilers

Chumsley turns out to be Vera’s childhood toy, left in a drawer when she grew up, and he takes over the dollhouse out of hurt. Vera and Chumsley save each other in a collapsing candy world, the magic comes back, and Gabby helps Gigi build a dog-themed dollhouse for her sister.

Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie's Blurbs
About me:

Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner) is all about cats, and her favorite thing on Earth is the dollhouse her Grandma Gigi (Gloria Estefan) built for her, home to a whole crew of Gabby Cats. The two road-trip to Cat Francisco with the dollhouse along for the ride, until CatRat accidentally unhooks it and it rolls right into a shop. Vera (Kristen Wiig), an eccentric cat lady, scoops it up and drives off. Gabby puts on her magic cat ears, shrinks down with her panda pal Pandy Paws, and goes to get it back. A lonely plush cat named Chumsley (Jason Mantzoukas) is waiting. Ryan Crego directs. Ninety-eight minutes, all whiskers.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can do the pinch and shrink to doll size. Cat ears required.
