David Wain basically remade The Wizard of Oz with a hairdresser from Kansas, and the seams show: Kansas girl, strange land, a crew of oddballs picked up on the road. Then the plot piles on. A jokey celebrity-crush deal with her fiancé goes sideways two weeks before the wedding, so Gail bolts to a Los Angeles hair convention, grabs the wrong briefcase from a criminal named Ludovica, and gets told by a psychic that tracking down Jon Hamm is the only way to fix things. None of it holds together, and the movie knows it. Zoey Deutch is why it works. She plays Gail with wide-eyed, peppy commitment, like the dumbest plan alive is a sacred quest. John Slattery, playing himself, does the detective work, and the discovery that "Weird Al" Yankovic bought Hamm’s old house is perfect nonsense. Audiences liked it less than critics did. A 6.4 because Deutch makes the nonsense fly. $4,336 says the next time you grab the wrong bag at an airport, your first move is to go looking for Jon Hamm.
What works: Zoey Deutch’s peppy, all-in performance carries every silly turn, and the Los Angeles odyssey has a loose, daffy energy.
What doesn’t: The briefcase plot about a criminal and her goons is pure filler that never really connects to Gail’s story.
Who it’s for: Fans of David Wain’s loose, sketch-style comedies and anyone who’d follow Zoey Deutch anywhere.
Jon Hamm passes on the gang’s screenplay but helps all of them anyway, and Gail heads home to Kansas for the wedding. At the altar she realizes she can’t go through with it, Hamm floats in on a hot air balloon and proposes, and she turns him down too before they drift off together.
Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) cuts hair in small-town Kansas and is two weeks out from marrying her fiancé Tom (Michael Cassidy). They make a jokey deal: each gets one celebrity crush, no hard feelings. Gail picks Jon Hamm. Tom's pick gets a little too real, so Gail bolts to a hairdressing convention in Los Angeles with her pal Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley). There she grabs the wrong briefcase, which belongs to a criminal named Ludovica (Sabrina Impacciatore), and a psychic convinces her that tracking down Hamm, playing himself, is the only way to save her engagement. David Wain directs. Ninety-four minutes, one very lost briefcase.
Jon Hamm. Gail has a briefcase, a pitch and a whole lot of questions.
