Nothing in Game Changer changes any game, which is an awkward problem for a movie with that title. Ram Charan plays Ram Nandan, a short-fused young officer who becomes District Magistrate of Visakhapatnam, gathers every crook in the district into one room, politely asks them to quit, and starts raiding when they laugh. Watching him seal a rice factory and flatten an illegal mall is a blast. S. J. Suryah clearly relishes playing the scheming minister Mopidevi, and Charan also takes on a second role in the flashbacks, where he’s at his best. Director Shankar, though, is running his old anti-corruption playbook, and over 165 minutes the set pieces feel stitched together instead of building to anything. Critics called it predictable and hasty right where it needed weight. IMDb voters, all 29,245 of them, average a 5.0. A 3.4 because Charan deserves a sharper script. $833 says you call a meeting to make your roommates quit leaving dishes in the sink.
What works: Ram Charan has real charisma in both of his roles, and his scenes opposite S. J. Suryah crackle with fun.
What doesn’t: Shankar recycles his old anti-corruption formula, and the long, hasty narrative never gives the big emotional turns room to land.
Who it’s for: Ram Charan fans, and viewers who like a hero who wins with paperwork as much as with punches.
Ram is revealed as the son of Appanna, the honest founder of the ruling party who was betrayed by his own allies. Ram ends up running the state election as its commissioner, keeps the voting machines safe from Mopidevi’s men, and the post-credits scene puts him in the Chief Minister’s chair.
Ram Nandan (Ram Charan) clears the civil services exam and lands his first big posting as District Magistrate of Visakhapatnam. He gets jumped before he even reaches the office, courtesy of an old college rival who runs an illegal sand racket, protected by Minister Bobbili Mopidevi (S. J. Suryah), son of the state's Chief Minister. Ram's first move on the job is to call in every crook in the district and tell them to quit. They laugh. Then the raids start. Kiara Advani plays Deepika, the woman who steered him toward public service. Shankar directs. One hundred sixty-five minutes, paperwork has never hit harder.
Honest officials and anyone who reads the fine print. Corrupt ministers, start packing.
