The big romantic gesture in Girls Like Girls is handing over an AIM screen name, which tells you exactly how 2006 this is. Hayley Kiyoko adapts her own book about Coley, a grieving teenager who moves to rural Oregon to live with Curtis, the dad she barely knows, and Sonya, the competitive dancer who pulls her into her circle of friends. The weak link is Trenton, Sonya’s boyfriend, who’s so sour from his first scene that he’s basically a red flag with a driver’s license. The back-and-forth between the girls also repeats one beat too many, and audiences were far cooler on it than critics. Maya da Costa makes Coley closed off and hurting, and Myra Molloy shows Sonya’s fear of what everyone will say. The look is dreamy, all lake days and a secret spot by the railroad tracks. Critics gave it 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 6.6 because it’s tender and honest, and a little too familiar. $914 says you try to remember your old screen name tonight and are thrilled nobody can look it up.
What works: Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy give tender, believable performances, and the film’s dreamy look makes the summer feel like a memory.
What doesn’t: Trenton is a one-note bully, and the girls’ push and pull repeats the same beat once too often.
Who it’s for: Anyone who once rewrote an away message over and over, hoping one specific person would read it.
Coley learns it was Trenton, not Sonya, who spread her private news around, and she and Curtis decide to start over. At a party by the pool, Sonya ends things with Trenton and tells Coley she’s tired of running, and Coley tells her she can stop.
Summer 2006. Seventeen-year-old Coley (Maya da Costa) moves to rural Oregon to live with Curtis (Zach Braff), the dad she barely knows. At a restaurant she gets pulled into a local crew run by Sonya (Myra Molloy), a competitive dancer whose boyfriend Trenton (Levon Hawke) does not like the new girl one bit. After a rough first day at the lake, Sonya apologizes and hands over her AIM screen name, and the two get close fast. Hayley Kiyoko directs, adapting her own 2023 book. Ninety-five minutes, away message on.
Anyone with a working AIM account and a burned CD for the drive.
