A reported $310M bought a flooded Colosseum full of sharks, a fighter riding a rhino and two emperors who giggle like bored teenagers, and the whole thing still plays like a greatest hits album turned up louder. Paul Mescal is fine as Hanno, but he broods where the first movie’s hero burned, and the script hands him speeches instead of a personality. Pedro Pascal’s general is solid and badly underused. Denzel Washington is the whole show. His Macrinus is a smiling schemer who treats every conversation like a sales pitch, and he’s clearly having more fun than anybody else in Rome. Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger go big and weird as the twin emperors. At 148 minutes, the political plotting drags between fights. It made $462.2 million worldwide. A 5.2 because Denzel is electric and everything around him feels secondhand. $219 says you describe some sequel as the same thing but with sharks at least once this year.
What works: Denzel Washington’s silky, scheming Macrinus and the over-the-top arena set pieces, sharks and all.
What doesn’t: Hanno is a blank wall of brooding, and the movie leans so hard on callbacks that it never builds a story of its own.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first Gladiator who want one more trip to the Colosseum and mostly came for Denzel.
Hanno is really Lucius, Lucilla’s son and the grandson of Marcus Aurelius, and the movie reveals that Maximus was his father. After the twin emperors fall, Macrinus grabs for the throne, and Lucius beats him in a final duel, then asks both armies to make peace in his grandfather’s name.
Years after the first film, Rome is run by twin emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), who love a parade and never say no to another war. Over in Numidia, in North Africa, Hanno (Paul Mescal) helps defend his city when the Roman general Acacius (Pedro Pascal) sails in to take it. Hanno loses everything and is hauled off as a prisoner. Then Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a rich, scheming owner of fighters, spots his talent and makes him an offer: keep winning in the Colosseum and you might get your revenge. Ridley Scott returns to direct. One hundred forty-eight minutes, sand, sandals and grudges.
Anyone who can hold a sword and a grudge at the same time.
