How Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Performed
movie guru's TLDR

How do you follow Knives Out? Apparently with a Greek island, a stack of puzzle boxes, and a host who is way less clever than his own invitations. Edward Norton’s Miles Bron is the joke and the problem: he’s such an obvious fraud that the movie works overtime to keep the mystery feeling mysterious. Then it rewinds halfway through and replays the weekend from a new angle, which is a fun trick and also a long one at 139 minutes. Daniel Craig is having the time of his life, wearing outfits a pool float would envy and drawling every line like it’s dessert. Janelle Monáe carries the emotional weight, Kate Hudson’s Birdie is a walking public relations disaster, and Dave Bautista brings real menace to a guy who livestreams for a living. A 7.4 because it’s a blast while it’s on and a little hollow after. $6.27 says you call something obvious a glass onion this week and your friends roll their eyes in unison.

What works: Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, Janelle Monáe’s layered performance, and a midpoint rewind that recasts the whole weekend.

What doesn’t: Miles is so plainly a fraud that the solution feels like a shrug, and the rewind makes a long movie feel even longer.

Who it’s for: People who like a whodunit with jokes and don’t mind when the answer is sitting right in front of them.

Spoilers

Andi was murdered before the trip, and the woman on the island is her twin sister Helen, working with Blanc to find the killer. It was Miles all along, his genius is fake, and Helen burns down his mansion and his borrowed Mona Lisa to prove it.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery's Blurbs
About me:

May 2020, and everybody is stuck at home. Tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) mails his old friends elaborate puzzle boxes inviting them to a murder mystery weekend on his private Greek island. The crew: scientist Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), governor Claire (Kathryn Hahn), fashion designer Birdie (Kate Hudson), streamer Duke (Dave Bautista), and Andi (Janelle Monáe), the cofounder Miles pushed out of his company. Famous detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) turns up too, and nobody seems sure who invited him. Writer and director Rian Johnson stacks up the layers. One hundred thirty-nine minutes, peel carefully.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can open a puzzle box without a hammer. Leave your ego at the dock.
