Gabriel, a guardian angel played by Keanu Reeves, spends his days saving drivers who can’t stop texting, and he’s bored stiff. It’s the best joke Good Fortune has, and Reeves milks it. Aziz Ansari, directing his first feature, plays Arj, who lives in his car and juggles gig apps, and Gabriel swaps his life with that of Jeff, a rich tech investor played by Seth Rogen, to prove money won’t fix anything. It fixes basically everything. That’s a sharp joke, and Ansari has real things to say about how gig workers get treated in Los Angeles. Keke Palmer plays Elena, a coworker trying to unionize the hardware store, and she’s the movie’s conscience. The weak spot: it’s a life swap comedy, and you can call most turns early. It made $26.4 million worldwide on a reported $30M. A 6.4 because Reeves is a comedy natural and the formula is well worn. $213.51 says you leave your phone face down at the next red light, just in case someone upstairs is keeping score.
What works: Reeves plays Gabriel with sweet, deadpan comic timing, and the jokes about gig work and money actually have a point.
What doesn’t: It’s a life swap comedy that follows the old formula closely, so the big turns arrive right on schedule.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has juggled three gig apps in one week and wants to laugh about it.
Arj finally agrees to swap back, Jeff returns to his old life and pushes his delivery app to treat its workers better, and Arj starts a documentary about gig workers. In the last shot, a taco Arj leaves behind for Gabriel quietly floats off the plate.
Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) is a guardian angel on the lowest rung, mostly stopping people from texting while driving, and he wants a bigger assignment. Enter Arj (Aziz Ansari), an aspiring documentary maker juggling gig apps and a hardware store job while living out of his car. Arj lands a short stint assisting Jeff (Seth Rogen), a rich tech investor, and it ends fast. So Gabriel tries to teach Arj that money is not everything by swapping his life with Jeff's. Arj loves it. That was not the plan. Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh costar. Aziz Ansari writes and directs. Ninety-seven minutes, wings optional.
Anyone who has ever stared at a gig app tip screen and sighed. Angels with time on their hands.
