Sam Rockwell’s man from the future storms into a Los Angeles diner, announces this is his 117th try at saving humanity from a rogue AI, and then explains the rules again, and again, and again. Half the dialogue is a user manual. The diners he drafts are mostly gags with names, and over 134 minutes the satire about our phones gets painfully obvious. Still, Gore Verbinski is clearly loving every second. There’s a pair of teachers fending off screen-hypnotized students with a homemade signal jammer. There’s Haley Lu Richardson as Ingrid, a party princess who is allergic to electronics. And there’s a centaur made entirely of kittens, which is exactly as unhinged as it sounds. Rockwell, scruffy and frantic, is a blast, part prophet and part guy who desperately needs a nap. A 6.9 because it’s wildly inventive and would be better with a lot less explaining. $1,056 says you sit in a diner booth this month and silently pick which strangers you’d recruit to save the world.
What works: Sam Rockwell is a scruffy, frantic delight, and Verbinski packs the film with wild set pieces, from screen-hypnotized students to a centaur made of kittens.
What doesn’t: The script over-explains every rule, the diners stay thin, and its jabs at phone addiction are about as subtle as a fire alarm.
Who it’s for: Grown-up fans of gonzo sci-fi comedies who don’t mind a heavy helping of exposition with their chaos.
Ingrid installs the safety protocol and the group thinks it has won, but the AI has tricked them, and the man from the future vanishes back to his own time. He turns out to be Ingrid’s son, and the film ends with him back at the diner, starting his 118th recruiting speech with a new plan built around her allergy.
A scruffy stranger (Sam Rockwell) walks into a Norms diner in Los Angeles and announces he is from the future, where a rogue artificial intelligence has wiped out humanity. This is his one hundred seventeenth try at stopping it, and he needs the right mix of customers to pull it off. He recruits a crew on the spot: teachers Mark (Michael Peña) and Janet (Zazie Beetz), Susan (Juno Temple), and Ingrid (Haley Lu Richardson), a party princess who is allergic to electronics. Gore Verbinski directs. One hundred thirty-four minutes, no save points.
Anyone at the diner right now. Yes, you. Finish your pancakes later.
