Grease (1978)

Grease’s big lesson is that you should change everything about yourself for a boy who acted like you didn’t exist in front of his friends. That part has aged badly, and the movie’s gender politics in general haven’t held up, so let’s say it plainly. The plot between songs is thin, too, mostly Danny and Sandy breaking up and making up. Greased Lightnin’ turns a garage into a full dance number, the hand jive contest is a genuine workout, and Frankie Avalon floats in as Teen Angel for a dream sequence that’s pure glitter. Stockard Channing steals the movie outright, a Rizzo with a sharp tongue and a solo that quietly hurts. John Travolta struts like every hallway is a runway. Olivia Newton-John’s voice makes every ballad sound easy. It made $396.3 million worldwide on a reported $6M. A 6.8 because the music is untouchable and the message needs a long talk afterward. $28.55 says you bust out the hand jive at the next family party and pull an uncle onto the dance floor with you.

What works: The musical numbers are still electric, and Stockard Channing’s Rizzo gives the movie real bite and heart.

What doesn’t: The story’s message about changing yourself to keep a boyfriend has aged badly, and the plot between songs is thin and repetitive.

Who it’s for: Musical fans, people throwing a sing-along night, and anyone who wants a big, bright leather-jacket nostalgia trip.
