Green and Gold has exactly one big idea, and it’s a good one: Buck, a hardheaded Wisconsin farmer staring down foreclosure in 1993, cuts a deal with the bank that he gets more time on his mortgage if the Packers take the Super Bowl. Everything around that bet is familiar. Critics who didn’t care for it called it predictable and a little manipulative, in that cozy made-for-TV way, and Buck’s stubbornness can make him hard to warm up to. The ones who liked it praised how real the farm life feels and how natural the performances are. Craig T. Nelson anchors it as Buck, and Madison Lawlor’s Jenny drew the warmest notices. It runs 95 minutes, holds a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $1.72 million domestically. A 5.6 because it’s earnest and it never once surprises you. $5,052 says you’re shouting at the Packers on screen by the last act, even if your team is the Bears.
What works: The farm life feels authentic, and Craig T. Nelson and Madison Lawlor give natural, sympathetic performances.
What doesn’t: The story follows predictable, made-for-TV beats, and Buck’s stubbornness sometimes makes him tough to root for.
Who it’s for: Packers fans, Wisconsin families, and anyone who likes an earnest underdog story on a quiet night.
No spoilers on this one: whether the Packers come through for Buck is the whole game, and you’ll have to watch to find out.
It is 1993 in Wisconsin, and Buck (Craig T. Nelson) is a stubborn dairy farmer about to lose his land to foreclosure. So he makes the most Wisconsin move possible: a bet with his own bank on the Green Bay Packers. If the Pack takes the Super Bowl, the bank gives him more time on the mortgage. If not, nobody wants to think about that. Scotty (M. Emmet Walsh), Billy (Brandon Sklenar) and Jenny (Madison Lawlor) are also in the mix. Anders Lindwall directs, shooting around Door County and Green Bay. Ninety-five minutes, cheese not included.
Cheeseheads, farm kids and anyone who ever bet the house on their team. Please do not do this.
