A bone-dry English Channel is the best idea in Greenland 2: Migration, and it’s a shame the rest of the trip feels like a funeral procession. Five years after the comet, the Garritys’ bunker in Greenland cracks apart, and the family limps across a wrecked Europe toward a rumored safe zone in a crater in southern France. Along the way, side characters disappear so suddenly that you stop learning names, and the script swings from bleak to syrupy without much in between. Gerard Butler is the reason to stay. He plays John as a worn-down dad with no swagger left, just stubbornness. The dried-out channel, a windswept desert where the sea used to be, is a striking image. The rest is gray ash, gray skies and gray dialogue. It made $45.2 million worldwide on a reported $90M. A 4.1 because Butler commits and the movie never finds a pulse. $5,221 says you look up whether anyone has ever walked across the English Channel at low tide and get way too invested in the answer.
What works: Gerard Butler gives a steady, unshowy performance, and the image of a dried-up English Channel is genuinely eerie.
What doesn’t: Side characters are killed off so abruptly they never matter, and the grim tone flips into heavy sentiment without earning it.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first Greenland and of Gerard Butler playing a tired dad with a family to save.
John has been hiding that he is dying from radiation sickness. He is shot protecting the group shortly before they reach the crater, which really has healed into green farmland, and he dies within sight of it, knowing Allison, Nathan and young Camille made it.
Five years after the comet Clarke wrecked the planet, the Garrity family is still living in a bunker in Greenland. John (Gerard Butler) scouts and keeps the machines running, Allison (Morena Baccarin) helps lead the community, and their teenage son Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis) is itching to become a scout too. Then earthquakes tear the bunker apart, and everybody has to get out fast. What comes next is a long trip across a wrecked Europe, looking for anywhere people can still live. Ric Roman Waugh directs. Ninety-eight minutes, terrible weather the whole way.
Anyone with a go-bag by the door. Pack a heavier coat.
