Too long, too pleased with itself, and rescued in the last stretch by a blue guy with a whistle. Vol. 2 runs 136 minutes and parks a huge chunk of the middle on a planet that looks like a screensaver while Kurt Russell explains himself very slowly. The jokes keep going after they’ve landed. Drax laughs, Rocket insults somebody, Drax laughs again. Splitting the team up for most of the movie kills the chemistry that made the first one pop. But Michael Rooker’s Yondu walks in as a side character and leaves as the best thing in the movie. The opening credits, with Baby Groot dancing while everyone else fights a space monster behind him, are pure joy. The movie.guru score is an 8.1, and the crowd is right about the good parts. My 6.8 is because the good parts are spread thin over a lot of padding. $31 says on the rewatch you play the opening credits, skip to Yondu, and call that the whole movie.
What works: Baby Groot’s dance through the opening fight, and Michael Rooker turning Yondu into the emotional center of the movie.
What doesn’t: The middle stalls on Ego’s planet for ages, and the gags get repeated until they stop being gags.
Who it’s for: Fans who already love this crew and don’t mind spending extra time with them while the plot naps.
Ego is a living planet who wants to cover the universe with himself, and he admits he gave Peter’s mom the tumor that killed her. Yondu gives his life saving Peter and gets a Ravager funeral with fireworks lighting up the sky.
The Guardians are heroes for hire now: Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and a tiny, dancing Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). They take a job from the Sovereign, a golden-skinned people who are extremely easy to offend, guarding precious batteries from a space monster. Then Rocket pockets a few, and the Sovereign fleet comes after them. A stranger named Ego (Kurt Russell) saves them and drops a bombshell: he is Peter's father. Meanwhile Yondu (Michael Rooker) is on their trail. James Gunn directs. One hundred thirty-six minutes, Awesome Mix Vol. 2 on repeat.
Anyone with a good mixtape and a stable family situation. One out of two is fine.
