Filmed theater always loses a little on the trip to the big screen, and Hadestown: The Musical is no exception. The goosebump moments land a half step softer than they would in the room, it runs 141 minutes, and no camera angle will convert someone who can’t stand musicals. Everyone else, grab a seat. Five leads from the original Broadway company are here, and they’re incredible. Reeve Carney’s Orpheus proposes to Eurydice almost the moment they meet and swears his unfinished song can bring spring back. Eva Noblezada makes Eurydice’s hunger and doubt so real that her choice to head underground makes total sense. Patrick Page’s Hades rumbles like a factory boss with a grudge, Amber Gray turns Persephone’s secret club into a blast, and André De Shields narrates as Hermes with sly, warm cool. The jazzy score sounds fantastic. It made $20.7 million worldwide. A 9.2 because it’s a near-perfect musical, captured with real care. $55.54 says you play the cast album on repeat this week and try to sing as low as Hades.
What works: The five original Broadway leads are phenomenal, and the jazz-soaked score and staging come through with real clarity.
What doesn’t: As a stage recording it can’t match being in the room, and at 141 minutes it’s a long sit for anyone who isn’t already a musical fan.
Who it’s for: Musical theater fans who never got to see the original Broadway cast, and anyone who loves a tragic love story told with a great band.
Hades lets the lovers go on one condition: Orpheus must walk out ahead and never look back. He turns around just before the end, Eurydice is pulled back to Hadestown, and Hermes starts the story over again, before the cast raises their cups to Orpheus after the curtain call.
A filmed stage performance of Hadestown, captured at the Lyric Theatre in London across three live shows in early 2025. The story is the old Greek one, retold with a band: a poor young singer, the girl he loves, and a factory deep underground run by Hades. Five principals from the original Broadway company lead it: Orpheus (Reeve Carney), Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), Hades (Patrick Page), Persephone (Amber Gray) and Hermes (André De Shields), who narrates. West End performers play the Fates and the workers. Cameras go where a ticket never could, even riding the stage lift down. Brett Sullivan directs. One hundred forty-two minutes, best seat in the house.
Anyone who has ever sung along in a theater and gotten shushed. Nobody can stop you here.
