The hair. Every boy at Hogwarts has the same shaggy mop this year, like the whole school lost a bet with one barber. Goblet of Fire is the busiest Potter movie: a dragon, a lake, a hedge maze, a school dance and a tournament, all jammed into 157 minutes, and it still sprints past half the book. Mike Newell makes Hogwarts feel like an actual boarding school, all crushes and awkward silences, and the Yule Ball is the most painfully real teen stuff in the series. Ron’s dress robes deserve their own spinoff. Then Dumbledore grabs Harry by the shoulders and interrogates him like a tax auditor, and the internet never let Michael Gambon forget it. Brendan Gleeson’s Mad-Eye Moody is twitchy fun. The movie.guru score is a big 8.7, and I’m lower. A 7.0 because every piece is great and the movie keeps cutting each one off to rush to the next. $3,724 says the Yule Ball reminds you of your own worst school dance and you need a minute.
What works: The Yule Ball, the dragon task, Brendan Gleeson, and a darker ending that changes the whole series.
What doesn’t: It crams a huge book into a highlight reel, so the tasks feel disconnected and the mystery barely gets room to breathe.
Who it’s for: Fans who remember exactly who they asked to their first dance, and anyone who likes a tournament plot.
The Triwizard Cup is a trap that sends Harry and Cedric to a graveyard, where Cedric is killed and Voldemort returns in a new body. Mad-Eye Moody turns out to be Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise.
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is heading into his fourth year at Hogwarts, and this time the school is hosting the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous three-school competition for eternal glory. Only students seventeen and up can enter. So it's a problem when the Goblet of Fire picks four champions instead of three, and the fourth name is Harry's. Now he's up against Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson), Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy) and Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ianevski), Ron (Rupert Grint) is barely speaking to him, and Hermione (Emma Watson) is stuck in the middle. Mike Newell directs. One hundred fifty-seven minutes, one very rude goblet.
Anyone with a date for the Yule Ball. Ron is still asking around.
