The fattest Potter book became one of the shortest Potter movies, and you can hear the scissors. Order of the Phoenix runs 138 minutes and races through a secret club, a prophecy, the whole Ministry of Magic and a pile of new faces, so half the story happens in montages and spinning newspaper headlines. The trade is Imelda Staunton. Her Dolores Umbridge smiles like a kindergarten teacher and runs Hogwarts like a parking enforcement office, and she’s scarier than any snake-faced wizard. Watching the kids finally learn real spells in secret is the most fun the series has had in a while, and the Weasley twins get a legendary exit. Harry spends a lot of the movie yelling, which is fair, he’s a teenager and nobody believes him. Over 713,000 IMDb ratings average a 7.5. A 6.9 because Umbridge is iconic and the rest feels like reading the summary on the back of the box. $312 says you spot a pink cardigan this week and feel a chill.
What works: Imelda Staunton’s Umbridge, the secret student club, and the Weasley twins’ fireworks goodbye.
What doesn’t: It compresses a massive book so hard that big story beats land as montages, and new characters barely get introduced.
Who it’s for: Fans who love a villain they can truly hate, and anyone who ever had a teacher who loved rules more than students.
The prophecy trip to the Ministry is a trap, and Bellatrix kills Sirius during the fight. Dumbledore and Voldemort duel in the atrium, and the Minister of Magic finally sees with his own eyes that Voldemort is back.
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) spends his summer on Privet Drive insisting Voldemort is back, and almost nobody believes him. Then Dementors show up in the suburbs, Harry fights them off to protect his cousin, and the Ministry of Magic tries to expel him for it. Back at Hogwarts, the Ministry plants Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. She loves pink, kitten plates and rules. So many rules. So Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) decide to start teaching real spells in secret. David Yates directs. One hundred thirty-eight minutes, zero useful homework.
Anyone who wants to learn actual defensive magic. Meeting spot to be announced. Tell nobody.
