Heart Eyes looks like a Valentine’s card and plays like a slasher, so think twice before picking it for a first date. Ally McCabe, played by Olivia Holt, is a jewelry marketer fresh off a breakup who pitches an ad about doomed couples, terrible timing in a city where a masked killer stalks couples every Valentine’s Day. Her boss pairs her with Jay, a smooth freelancer played by Mason Gooding. One kiss to save face in front of her ex, and the killer has them pegged as Seattle’s cutest couple. The surprise is how well the rom-com half works. They bicker about love over dinner, he helps her break into her own apartment after she forgets her key, and you actually root for them. It landed 78% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, regular audiences were a lot cooler, and the scary half is much rougher than the title lets on. A 6.6 because it really does work as both. $43.48 says you skip the fancy restaurant this February and cook at home with the doors locked.
What works: The rom-com half is legitimately charming, and the film blends its two genres better than it has any right to.
What doesn’t: The slasher half is far rougher than the cute title suggests, and regular audiences liked it a lot less than critics did.
Who it’s for: Grown-up horror fans who secretly love a good meet-cute.
The Heart Eyes Killer turns out to be two people: David, the IT guy who asked Ally out at the police station, and Detective Shaw, who are secretly married. Ally and Jay survive, and a year later Ally is back in medical school and proposes to Jay at a drive-in.
Ally McCabe (Olivia Holt) is freshly single and works in marketing for a jewelry company. Bad timing: a masked killer has spent the last few Valentine's Days going after couples, a new city every year, and this year it is Seattle. Her boss Crystal (Michaela Watkins) teams her with slick freelancer Jay Simmonds (Mason Gooding) to rescue a campaign. At dinner, Ally spots her ex and kisses Jay to save face. The Heart Eyes Killer sees it. Now they look like a couple to exactly the wrong audience. Josh Ruben directs. Ninety-seven minutes, roses not included.
Anyone single on February 14 and proud of it. Safer that way.
