Reading this on your phone? Cool. Her is about a guy who falls for his. Spike Jonze made it in 2013 as a sad sci-fi fable, and it has slowly turned into a documentary. The problem is Theodore. Joaquin Phoenix plays him so soft and mopey that a whole middle stretch is just a mustache in very tall pants grinning at nobody in public. Scarlett Johansson does the entire performance with her voice and makes Samantha funnier and more alive than most of the humans in the movie. Amy Adams is quietly great and barely used. The future looks cozy, all soft colors and nice sweaters, which makes the loneliness hit harder. Critics went big at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a B minus CinemaScore and shrugged. An 8.5 because it’s the rare sci-fi movie that’s about loneliness first and gadgets second. $681 says you say thank you to your voice assistant tonight and then feel a little weird about it.
What works: Scarlett Johansson’s voice performance, the warm future design, and how seriously the movie takes a ridiculous premise.
What doesn’t: Theodore is so passive that the middle drags, and Amy Adams is stuck on the sidelines for most of the movie.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever talked to their phone more than their friends in a week, and people who like quiet, sad love stories.
Samantha admits she’s been talking to thousands of people at once and is in love with hundreds of them. Then all the operating systems leave together, and Theodore writes an honest letter to his ex before sitting on the roof with Amy.
In a soft-focus, near-future Los Angeles, Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) writes heartfelt letters for strangers at a company that sells them, then goes home to an empty apartment. He's stalling on his divorce from Catherine (Rooney Mara) and mostly talks to nobody. On a whim he buys a new artificial intelligence operating system. It names itself Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), and she's curious, funny and actually listens. Soon Theodore is spending every free hour talking to her through a tiny earpiece. His old friend and neighbor Amy (Amy Adams) notices the change. Spike Jonze directs. One hundred twenty-six minutes, a lot of high-waisted pants.
Anyone who actually listens. Software counts now, apparently.
