Here never moves its camera, and after a while you’ll want to get up and move for it. Robert Zemeckis aims one locked-down frame at one plot of ground and flips through eras like pages: dinosaurs, an ice age, a Lenni-Lenape couple, the estate of Benjamin Franklin’s son, then a house built around 1900. Most of the time belongs to the Youngs. Al and Rose, played by Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly, buy the place after World War II, and their son Richard (Tom Hanks) grows up, marries Robin Wright’s Margaret young and never leaves. A side story about Leo, an inventor who comes up with the La-Z-Boy, is the charmer. Generative AI de-ages the cast across decades, and the sentiment gets laid on thick. It reunites the Forrest Gump trio, and critics still gave it 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 4.3 because a daring concept can’t make the drama move. $8,498 says you look up who lived in your house before you, then side-eye the living room for a week.
What works: The fixed-frame idea is genuinely bold to look at, and the Beekman side story about the recliner inventor is a little gem.
What doesn’t: The static camera turns into a gimmick fast, and the Young family drama is so syrupy it keeps telling you exactly when to cry.
Who it’s for: Forrest Gump fans who want one more Hanks and Wright reunion and don’t mind a slow, sentimental sit.
In 2024 an elderly Richard brings Margaret, who now has dementia, back to the empty house, and the memory of Vanessa losing a blue ribbon at school brings her happy memories rushing back. Then the camera finally moves, swinging out to a view from the roof of William Franklin’s old mansion, and a hummingbird closes the film.
Robert Zemeckis parks the camera in one spot and basically never moves it. That spot is a single patch of land, later a living room, and the film hops across centuries of everything that happens there, from dinosaurs to the Lenni-Lenape to the families who move into the house built on it in the early 1900s. The heart of it is the Young family: Richard (Tom Hanks), his wife Margaret (Robin Wright), and his parents Al (Paul Bettany) and Rose (Kelly Reilly). Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel. One hundred four minutes, one room, a few million years.
Anyone who has ever wondered who lived in their house before them.
