Home Alone 2 is Home Alone again with a bigger hotel bill. Same airport mix-up, same burglars, same traps, just swap the suburbs for New York and crank everything louder until the slapstick stops being funny and starts to look like it hurts. The bricks off the roof are where the cartoon logic snaps. Tim Curry as the Plaza concierge steals the movie, a man who treats a kid’s room service order like a hostage negotiation. Brenda Fricker’s Pigeon Lady gives the movie its heart, and Kevin rolling around Manhattan with Dad’s credit card is the dream of every kid who ever sat through a family vacation. Critics gave it 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences gave it $359 million worldwide anyway. A 5.6 because it’s a remake dressed up as a sequel, rescued by Curry and some real New York at Christmas. $502 says you open a hotel room service menu someday and hear Tim Curry asking how you plan to pay.
What works: Tim Curry’s suspicious concierge, the Pigeon Lady, and a kid let loose in New York at Christmas.
What doesn’t: It copies the first movie’s plot almost scene for scene, and the traps get so harsh the comedy curdles.
Who it’s for: Kids who already wore out the first one and want the same thing with taller buildings.
Kevin lures Harry and Marv into his uncle’s half-renovated townhouse full of traps, and they end up arrested. He gives the Pigeon Lady one of his two turtle doves, and his dad finally sees the room service bill.
One year after the first mix-up, the McCallisters are heading to Miami for Christmas, and Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is sulking about the palm trees. The family oversleeps again, the airport turns into a stampede, and Kevin follows a man in the same coat as his dad onto the wrong plane. He lands in New York City holding the bag of his dad, Peter (John Heard), wallet and all. So he checks into the Plaza Hotel, where the concierge, Mr. Hector (Tim Curry), smells something fishy. Then Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) turn up, fresh out of prison. Chris Columbus directs. One hundred twenty minutes, all on Dad's card.
Anyone who knows a good pizza place near the Plaza. Bring a tape recorder.
