Imagine reading your family tree like a to-do list. That’s the joke at the center of How to Make a Killing, and the movie never decides whether you should laugh or wince. Glen Powell plays Becket Redfellow, the grandson a wealthy family pretended didn’t exist, stuck selling luxury suits in New York until a loophole puts him in line for the entire fortune. The tone swings from slapstick to sorrow so fast you can hear the gears grind, and Margaret Qualley’s Julia, his childhood friend, mostly exists to move the plot along. Powell is the reason it moves. He’s so charming you keep forgetting what he’s up to, and the film seems just as charmed as you are. Bill Camp is a treat as the uncle who welcomes him into the firm. It made $21.7 million worldwide on a reported $15M. A 5.0 because Powell is a star and the script never figures out what to do with him. $116 says you start being suspiciously sweet to your richest relative, and they notice by dessert.
What works: Glen Powell’s easy charm carries every scene, and the film looks sleek and stylish from the first frame to the last.
What doesn’t: The tone lurches between dark comedy and sincere drama, and it wants to mock the rich while enjoying their mansions just as much.
Who it’s for: Glen Powell fans and grown-ups who like their family comedies with a very dark streak running through them.
Becket ends up convicted of the one death he didn’t cause, that of Julia’s husband. Julia clears him only after he signs the whole fortune over to her, Ruth walks away for good, and the last shot has Becket riding back to the family mansion with Julia.
Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell) grows up with his single mom Mary (Nell Williams), who was cut off from the ridiculously rich Redfellow family for keeping her baby. Years later, Becket sells luxury suits in New York City and barely gets by. Then he learns a loophole in the will still puts him in line for the family fortune, all twenty-eight billion dollars of it. The only problem is the relatives ahead of him. Childhood friend Julia Steinway (Margaret Qualley) reappears, his job goes south, and Becket starts plotting. John Patton Ford directs. One hundred five minutes, inheritance pending.
Anyone named Redfellow. Watch your back at family reunions.
