Hiding inside a coffee cart to sneak into a fashion mogul’s office is the most normal thing anyone does in I Love Boosters. Boots Riley stuffs teleporters, a mystery man with a pinky ring and a full labor uprising into one Bay Area heist comedy, and once the sci-fi kicks in, the crew gets lost in its own plot. You never really know Corvette, Mariah and Sade, so the big swings land as spectacle, not feeling. Still, it’s legit funny. Keke Palmer is a live wire as Corvette, a would-be designer who notices the chain she robs is selling a copy of her own design. Poppy Liu is great as Jianhu, a factory worker who beats the gang to the store they planned to clean out. The costumes and sets are gorgeous. It made $9.7 million at the domestic box office on a reported $20M. A 6.6 because it’s bursting with ideas and short on people. $903.12 says the next coffee cart you pass gets a long look while you guess whether a grown-up fits inside.
What works: Keke Palmer is electric, the costume and production design are a feast, and Riley’s best gags about who really pays for cheap clothes hit hard.
What doesn’t: The characters stay thin, so when the story spins off into sci-fi chaos there’s nobody you know well enough to hang on to.
Who it’s for: Fans of loud, political, anything-goes comedies who would rather see a big weird swing than a tidy heist movie.
The gang uses the stolen devices to supercharge the protests at the fashion show and the factory, and the strikes spread around the world. The man with the pinky ring admits he’s a demon and asks Corvette to be with him anyway; she says no, and the crew ends up running a community center that sells affordable clothes.
Corvette (Keke Palmer), Sade (Naomi Ackie) and Mariah (Taylour Paige) are the Velvet Gang, a Bay Area crew of boosters who lift clothes from the Metro Designers chain and resell them cheap. The chain belongs to Christie Smith (Demi Moore), a designer who goes on TV to call fashion art and to trash the gang. The catch: Corvette designs clothes too, and she low-key idolizes Christie. Then she spots one of Christie's new pieces and realizes it is her own design. Boots Riley directs. One hundred thirteen minutes, all sales final.
Anyone who loves a designer piece at a discount. Do not ask where it came from.
